GENERAL RULES FOR CGCI AWARDS

PLEASE NOTE: All application and evaluation forms can be downloaded from the CGCI website or obtained from your District Director or the CGCI Awards Chairman.
1. AWARDS YEAR: January 1 to December 31. This applies to all entries except the Club Yearbook Award (G-2), the District Yearbook Award (G-3) and the Club Program Award (G-8), which are based on the club year.
2. ELIGIBILITY: CGCI garden clubs, associate plant societies, affiliates (in good standing) and districts are eligible to apply. Individual club members may apply as stated in the award description.
3. APPLICATION FORMS: Each entry requires a current CGCI Award application form unless otherwise stated under the award description.
4. EVALUATION FORMS: Judges use a separate evaluation form to score each entry. Refer to the scale of points on the award evaluation form as a guide to know what the judges will be looking for when making your book of evidence. Submit a copy of the form where required.
5. WHAT AND WHERE TO SEND: Submit a book of evidence for all entries unless the award description states, “No Book of Evidence Required.” Mail to the chairman listed in the award description.
6. DEADLINES: Failure to meet the deadline may result in maximum point deduction.

December 1: ALL NGC AWARDS including club and district yearbooks, club and district newsletters, publications other than yearbook or newsletter, National Garden Week, Video, Website, Wildflower, High School Essay Contest, CGCI Community Impact Award and those eligible for NGC Flower Show Achievement Awards.

7. BOOK OF EVIDENCE: A compilation of pages explaining how the project was accomplished. It should be brief, neat and concise. No handwritten text.
• Binder: Use pronged, theme binders with a soft or hard cover. (Beware! Slick binders do not hold glues- use rubber cement). No 3-ring notebooks/binders.
• Paper Size/Page Count: Letter-size (8 1/2" x 11"). Use a maximum of six (6) sheets, twelve (12) pages or as specified in the award description. Exceptions: Publicity Press Book Award (PR-1) has no limit to number of pages; CGCI and NGC Flower Show Awards have a maximum of ten (10) sheets or twenty (20) pages. NOTE: Entries that exceed the maximum number of pages specified, will have 10 points automatically deducted from the total score.
• Label: Affix to front cover with name of award, the award number, section/class if any, name of club, number of club members and district. (NOTE: Make sure the number of club members listed is the same as the number of members for which the club has submitted dues to CGCI.)
• Application Form: Complete the CGCI application form and insert it in the sheet protector as page one of your book of evidence unless otherwise noted. Include a brief summary of your entry on the application form.
• Evaluation Form: Place the form in a #10 envelope affixed inside the back cover of the folder. Judges will use this form to evaluate your entry.
• Use Clear Plastic Page Protectors: Each page protector will display two pages back-to-back. (This can be two sides of one sheet or two separate sheets.)
• Compiling the Book:
◊ Page 1 is the CGCI application form. Make sure it is complete!
◊ Data: The pages after page 1 should include a project report if required, plus other evidence that fits the award description, e.g., photographs, publicity, financial report, letters of appreciation, etc. (Club Newsletters qualify as publicity).
◊ Other: Loose material (handouts, etc.) should be affixed to a page inside a page protector. Number the pages.
◊ Photographs: Digital and film photographs accepted. Photographs must be captioned.
8. RETURN OF ENTRIES: All entries will be displayed at the annual CGCI convention in June. District Directors must claim all entries/awards for their clubs at close of convention. The Awards Committee is not responsible for unclaimed entries.

9. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS: All are distributed at the annual CGCI convention. Award checks should be cashed within thirty (30) days of date of issue.

10. MONETARY AWARDS:
Money from sponsors must be on deposit with CGCI by August 31, one year in advance (bill is sent in July). Mail checks, payable to CGCI, to the Awards Secretary.

11. INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
: Awards stating “to an individual club member,” will be credited to the member’s club for Sweepstakes consideration. Both individual and club names will be on the certificate. Checks will be made payable to the individual.

12. NON-CONFORMANCE
: The Awards Coordinator, Awards Committee and/or judges reserve the right to determine if an entry:
- adheres to these Awards General Rules
- has been entered into the correct category.
Any entry judged not to conform to the General Rules will have points deducted. Entries submitted to the wrong category may be re-entered in a different category at the discretion of the Awards Chairman. NO AWARD: Judges reserve the right to withhold an award if it is determined that no entry is worthy. It is not CGCI’s policy to disqualify any award entry.

13: SCALE OF POINTS:
All entries will be judged and placement determined by the following Scale of Points (exception-Yearbooks):
1st Place – 91-100 3rd Place – 80-84
2nd Place – 85-90 4th Place – 75-79

14. CHANGES:
CGCI reserves the right to make changes to the awards program at any time. Changes to the awards program after publication of the CGCI Yearbook or Awards Manual will be published in Golden Gardens and on the CGCI website.

15. NATIONAL GARDEN CLUBS, INC AWARDS:
For information about the NGC awards program see the NGC Awards Manual available online or from the CGCI Awards Chairman. An overview with a listing of NGC awards can be found at the end of this manual in Appendix A.

16. PACIFIC REGION of NATIONAL GARDEN CLUBS, INC. AWARDS:
For information about the Pacific Region awards program, see the Pacific Region Awards Manual available online or from the CGCI Awards Chairman. An overview with a listing of Pacific Region awards can be found at the end of this manual in Appendix B.

To an individual member (exclusive of the state president in office) selected by the CGCI Awards Committee as one whose accumulation of service has contributed significantly to the overall objectives of CGCI. All garden club activities are to be considered, as well as club, district and state chairmanships and/or offices held and longevity. Individual members, clubs and districts may submit names of candidates, with supporting evidence. Photographs are not required. This award will be given only at the discretion of the Awards Committee. Submit detailed recommendation. No application form or Book of Evidence required.

CGCI LIFETIME SERVICE AWARD

The Gardener of the Year Award may be awarded to a garden club member whose volunteer efforts have made outstanding contributions in horticulture to his/her club and/or community in one or more of the following areas: public education, beautification, conservation, youth activities, horticulture therapy or all-around excellence in horticulture. AWARD OF HONOR

To be awarded to the District or Club youth leader who has demonstrated the most ingenuity and dedication in working with Youth Groups. CGCI FLOWER ARRANGER OF THE YEAR

LANDSCAPE DESIGN CONSULTANT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Submit recommendations to Landscape Design Council Chairman, Mary Lou Goodwin
The Landscape Design Consultant of the Year may be awarded each year, at the CGCI annual convention, to a Landscape Design Consultant in recognition of non-professional achievement, involvement and/or service in landscape design in either the community or the NGC Landscape Design program.

GARDENING CONSULTANT OF THE YEAR AWARD
$25 and Certificate to one individual

Submit recommendations to Gardening Consultants Council Chairman, Myrtle Findley
The Gardening Consultant of the Year may be awarded each year, at the CGCI Annual Convention, to an Accredited or Master Gardening Consultant in recognition of nonprofessional achievement, involvement and/or service as a gardening consultant in either the community or the NGC Gardening Consultant program.

CGCI SPECIAL AWARDS
NO RECOMMENDATIONS OR APPLICATIONS REQUIRED
No recommendation or applications accepted. The following Special Awards are based on official records on file with the CGCI Awards Coordinator (2nd Vice President) or appropriate Committee Chairman.

SWEEPSTAKES AWARD
One rosette in each class
Sponsor: Desert Planters of Ridgecrest, in memory of Marge S. Daiber, CGCI President, 1980-1982 To the clubs and district receiving the highest number of CGCI awards for the awards year. To be determined after all of the entries have been judged and the results tabulated by the Awards Coordinator.

C-2 PENNY PINES PLANTATION AWARD
1st $100 and framed certificate in each section
Sponsor: Wilma Parker (monetary); U.S. Forest Service, USDA (certificate)
No application required.
Penny Pines Chairman will determine winner based upon the plantations recorded during the year.
Section A - To the club purchasing the highest number of Penny Pines Plantations in the calendar year.
Section B - To the club purchasing the highest number of Penny Pines Plantations in
the calendar year based on percentage of club per capita membership.


G-4 BLUE RIBBON CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT
Certificates to clubs earning 100 points of a possible 200 points
No application required.
Clubs to complete form and submit to District Director by January 1. District Directors submit list of eligible clubs to CGCI Awards Certificate Chairman by January 10. Partial participation in any category will receive a partial point. A copy of the scale of points can be found in Appendix D of this manual.

C-9 BIRD CONSERVATION

C-10 BACKYARD HABITAT AWARD

For a program of activities in a home backyard of up to 1.5 acres, benefiting and establishing sanctuaries for neighborhood wildlife - birds, butterflies, mammals, reptiles, etc. Entry to include:
• A brief description of the garden, indicating an understanding of the needs and importance of all creatures.
• One or more photographs of wildlife, nests, feeders, birdhouses, etc.
• List of botanically named plants, trees, etc., which offer sanctuary and food.
• List of wildlife visiting or inhabiting the garden.

C-13 BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION: PORTFOLIO
DEADLINE: January 10

• Section A: A portfolio of photographs and printed pictures of chrysalides, caterpillars
and butterflies and their favorite food plants. Include butterfly related items from newspapers, magazines, bulletins, etc.

FLOWER SHOW AWARDS
GENERAL RULES
Submit all entries to the CGCI Flower Show Awards Chairman, Gudrun Kimmel, except
where noted.
PLEASE NOTE! To be eligible for an award a Flower Show must
be PRE-registered with the CGCI Flower Show Awards Chairman
◊ The registration form should include the date, theme and location of the
show and a list of judges and their addresses
◊ From the list of judges, the Flower Show Awards Chairman will select three
judges to evaluate the overall show
◊ The three-judge panel will determine the show’s eligibility for either a CGCI
or NGC Flower Show Achievement Award
receive a minimum point score by an evaluating panel of judges
◊ 90-94 points - CGCI Flower Show Achievement Award (FS-1A)
◊ 90-100 points – CGCI Flower Show Achievement Award – Small Standard

The Flower Show Awards Chairman will notify the show chairman the results of the
evaluation and whether the show is eligible for a CGCI or NGC award. Upon receipt of
this notification, the show chairman should prepare the appropriate book of evidence.

CALIFORNIA FLOWER SHOW ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS: FS-1A, FS-1B and FS-9
◊ Must be planned/staged by one or more NGC clubs
◊ May be held in home(s) or other suitable facility
◊ Must have written/printed Schedule
◊ Must be judged by NGC accredited judges according to NGC standards.

CGCI BOOK OF EVIDENCE:
BINDER: Use theme or pronged binders with a soft or hard cover folder (NO 3-RING
BINDERS.). Attach envelope to inside back cover for Schedule and evaluation forms.
Maximum of ten (10) sheets, twenty (20) sides within. Use clear protective page covers
except for CGCI application form. Page may be reduced in size, if desired, to permit
additional information on same page. Be brief, neat and concise. No handwritten text.
Photographs must be captioned. Place schedule in envelope affixed inside back cover. No decorative artwork.

COVER LABEL: Award number & name, name/s of sponsoring organization, show site (city & state).

APPLICATION FORMS: Flower Show Awards Chairman will send California Flower Show Achievement Award application forms with notice of eligibility. Attach application form to inside cover of the Book of Evidence.

EVALUATION FORMS: Download copies from the CGCI website, or contact the CGCI Awards Chairman or the Flower Show Awards Chairman. Use the points scale as a guide when making your book of evidence.

The CGCI Flower Show Awards Chairman will advise if the show is eligible. Upon receipt of the notification, prepare a Book of Evidence using the guidelines below. Judging criteria:
Show Evaluations - 75%, Book of Evidence - 25%.

NGC BOOK OF EVIDENCE:
BINDER: Use theme or pronged binders with a soft or hard cover (NO 3-RING
BINDERS.) Attach envelope to inside back cover for Schedule and evaluation forms.
Maximum of ten (10) sheets, twenty (20) sides within. Use clear protective page
covers, except for NGC Application Form. Follow carefully the sequential order of
requested information under Content Required below. NO decorative artwork.
COVER LABEL: Award number & name, name of state, name/s of sponsoring organization, show site (city & state).
APPLICATION FORM: All applications must be on current NGC forms obtained from
the CGCI Awards Chairman or the CGCI Flower Show Chairman. Permanently attach
one application form to inside cover of the Book of Evidence and a duplicate form
attached with paper clip.
CONTENT REQUIRED: see Handbook for Flower Shows 2007 edition, pp. 61-63.
Include: 1) Title Page, 2) Table of Contents, 3) Description of Show (300 words or
less), 4) Show Data (on form provided by State Awards Chairman, 5) Schedule (one

NGC AWARDS:

NGC #5 Club Standard Flower Show
Purple Rosette. Winning club is not eligible to receive this award in consecutive years.
• A: Membership fewer than 21. Minimum of one (1) Special Exhibit required.
• B: Membership 21-49. Minimum of two (2) Special Exhibits required.
• C: Membership 50-99. Minimum of three (3) Special Exhibits required.
• D: Membership 100 or more. Minimum of four (4) Special Exhibits required.

NGC #30 District Standard Flower Show
Green Rosette. Area named may be either District or Region as defined by the State
Garden Club. Award is based on total number of clubs within the area. There must be a participation of at least 75% of those clubs.
• A: District/region consisting of fifteen (15) or fewer NGC member garden clubs. Minimum of three (3) Special Exhibits required.
• B: District/region consisting of sixteen (16) or more NGC member clubs. Minimum
of four (4) Special Exhibits required.

NGC #57 Standard Flower Show Staged in Public Building
Burgundy/Pink Rosette. Show must be staged in an historic landmark (home, historical
restoration, etc.), museum, church, business, shopping center, mall, housing development, fair (world, state or county), garden center, or other commercial building.
• A: One (1) member club. Minimum of two (2) Special Exhibits required.l

FS-5 “DESIGNER’S CHOICE” AWARD

Certificate awarded to individuals by CGCI Gardening Consultants Council for an “outstanding” private garden. Application form available from Gardening Consultants Council Chairman or download from the CGCI website. May be given at any CGCI meeting. (Allow at least one month for consideration.) Council members or garden club members may propose candidates. Recipient will be notified of date/time of presentation, which may be presented during a tour; or if presented at a meal, the meal will be provided.

GENERAL RULES
AWARDS YEAR: January 1 to December 31
ELIGIBILITY
• Junior Gardeners: Pre-school through 6th grade
• Intermediate Gardeners: 7th through 9th grade
• High School Gardeners: 10th-12th grade. 9th grade in 4-yr school
• Youth Club Member: Member of a youth garden club
• Individual: Not a member of a youth garden club. Must be sponsored by an adult club member or adult club.

APPLICATION FORM: Each entry requires a current form, unless otherwise stated under award description. Obtain from the CGCI website or the CGCI Awards Chairman.

BOOK OF EVIDENCE:
Binder: Use theme or pronged binders with a soft or hard cover (NO 3-RING BINDERS).
Attach envelope to inside back cover for Schedule and evaluation Forms. Maximum of six (6) sheets, twelve (12 sides), or as specified in award description.
Use clear protective page covers. Page may be reduced in size, if desired, to permit additional information on same page. Be brief, neat and concise. No handwritten text.
Photographs must be captioned. Sponsoring club newsletter may be used as supporting evidence.
Label: Affix to front cover with name and number of award, names of youth club and sponsoring club and name of district.
Application: Place the CGCI application form into a plastic sheet protector and use as page 1. Make sure the form is complete!
Written Report: If required, should tell how the award requirements were fulfilled.
Evaluation Forms: Used by judges to score entry. Use scale of points as a guide for
content when making book of evidence. Obtain from the CGCI website or the CGCI
Awards Chairman. Evaluation form should be in a #10 envelope attached to the inside
back cover.

NATIONAL GARDEN CLUBS, INC.
PACIFIC REGION AWARDS

CGCI 1st place winners are automatically submitted for judging by Pacific Region. Judging
Chairman must have books of evidence to the CGCI Awards Chairman by February 5.
Below is a brief listing of some Pacific Region awards:
#1. For a Published Article, Pamphlet or Book by an Individual on Communications, Horticulture or Design.
#2. Newsletter or official publication by a club or District.
#3. Yearbook— Club, District, Council or Guild.
#4. Standard Flower Show Schedule (3 copies).
#5. Any Other Publication published during the awards year - Club or District.
#10. Civic Beautification. Roadside improvement, cleanup activities, or other worthwhile community beautification projects. Blue Star Marker gardens should be entered under #16 - Memorial Gardens.
#11. Fundraising Project or Event. An event held to raise funds for civic development, Blue Star Marker or other worthwhile project. Can be a one-day event or a continuing fundraising project. Flower shows alone are not eligible, but events held in conjunction with a show are eligible.
#12. Garden Therapy Program (club or district) Consisting of one or more activities or service projects designed to help the handicapped in the community. The program may be active or sedentary.
#13. Club Membership Campaign Report.
